Simulations and Games for Education

Image
While I was trying to explore more about PhET  ( https://phet.colorado.edu/ ) the simulation website I discussed in my post, I found an amazing other educational website which I am using with my students now. I would like to share it with you so probably you will use it; It is mainly for K-8 grades.  Online Educational Games for Teachers and Students. Legend of Learning https://www.legendsoflearning.com/. You can get a free account with limited games and no access to pre-made lesson plans but, definitely it is very engaging. I modified some of these games for my 9th grade classes.  There are several subjects included, together with standards from each grade, subject and state. You have option to use pre-made games/simulations or create one. You can check students progress and see what they answered correct or wrong and base your instruction on the outcome. You can have a link to copy-paste in any platform you use or directly connect it with google classroom. The ...

Adolescent Interview

Image
After reading the book and reading through many of my classmate's discussions, watching the you tube videos and of course as based on requirements I decided to interview a teenager. I tried to ask questions that are understandable for his age. The purpose of these questions as you will read below, it is to make sure he understands what I am asking and to listen to what he says. Before starting the interview I thought I knew everything but then as you will read he mentions holograms (which I was not familiar with the term) I have to admit I did not know everything. How and what are some ways that you use technology for?  I use technology for entertainment and for school. I use computers to write essays or do videos and answer questions and for entertainment I would watch movies or videos or play games with my friends. I text and talk with my friends with my cell phone. I am not interested in social media.   How much does technology impact your li...

Multiple Modalities and Remixing

This week's readings were captivating, I learned a lot about multiple modalities and remixing, these concepts which we use everyday. Something that got my attention was the connection between remixing as discussed in the book, remixing as we do it with our students during projects and remixing as for this class. Specifically for this assignment all of us are reading the same material but we also are required to incorporate another study (paper) different from the book. Does it looks like Learning by doing? Is this the " pedagogy of play" also? (Vasudevan, Dejanes & Schmier, 2013) (p. 24) Loomis (2019) admits that teachers often use remix activities without considering them remixing (p.239). Also, Erstad claims that the concept of remixing is nothing new (p.53).  I have seen and done remixing several times without knowing that this mix of strategies was a remix of digital literacy. As a teacher I try to use diverse teaching strategies for my students's diffe...

Evolution of Literacy

“what counts as literacy, how literacy changes in response to the new media landscape, and what value we should ascribe to the new forms of communication that continue to emerge and evolve online (Jenkins, 2009)."  📖--->💻 Traditional literacy or digital literacy? This is an interesting topic where researchers, professors, parents and young scholars' debate about. Are they really reading and as a result learning? Why is it difficult to accept change and an evolution in literacy?       We are evolving digitally and one of the main reasons are the digital-age jobs, as some literacy experts say that online reading skills will help children fare when they begin looking for digital-age jobs (Rich, 2). We do not know how we ended up having well organized and great content books. All we know is that, people started and developed a way to express themselves in order to transfer knowledge about different subjects from one individual to the other, so from one g...

New Literacies, verbal literacy and beyond it....

"The distinctive contribution of the approach to literacy as social practice lies in the ways in which it involves careful and sensitive attention to what people do with texts, how they make sense of them and use them to further their own purposes in their own learning lives" ( Gillen and Barton, 2010, p. 9). I teach science at a high school in NY which has a very diverse population. During Covid-19 I felt the need of  digital literacy more than ever.   When we were at class, I would use google translate to help my students while teaching Human Biology Bilingual. I personally understand and can read Spanish but instructing was a tremendous struggle for me. However, something I carefully observed and concluded was that students could write on their cell phones and translate much faster than me. Of course I prefer books and traditional literacy, but my students found it easier to learn English by typing and translating from their cell phones, instead of writing and t...
