Adolescent Interview
After reading the book and reading through many of my classmate's discussions, watching the you tube videos and of course as based on requirements I decided to interview a teenager. I tried to ask questions that are understandable for his age. The purpose of these questions as you will read below, it is to make sure he understands what I am asking and to listen to what he says. Before starting the interview I thought I knew everything but then as you will read he mentions holograms (which I was not familiar with the term) I have to admit I did not know everything.
How and what are some ways that you use technology for?
I use technology for entertainment and for school. I use computers to write essays or do videos and answer questions and for entertainment I would watch movies or videos or play games with my friends. I text and talk with my friends with my cell phone. I am not interested in social media.
How much does technology impact your life and your friend’s life?
It impacts it a lot because technology is used in everyday situations. If you need to go somewhere you would use technology as a GPS, if you want to stay home and relax you use technology as for entertaining, if you need to go to school and do work it's easier to do it on technology so, it impacts my life and my friends lives in several aspects.
What technology do you use in school ? Do you like using technology in school more or less than what you are using it right now?
If I use technology for school I would probably use it for less because in my opinion for school you need to read books and they are better than in ebooks. However, doing the actual work is easier on technology so I would prefer to write essays after reading books or paragraphs as part of a book. Some other ways I would use technology it would be to watch videos about learning and then solve or answer questions or research things online.
How does technology help you in scientific language?
Technology helps me with scientific vocabulary because I can research everything about science and if I don't know what it means I would just research that and make sure that I know the meaning of it.
What do you think about the technology and your social emotional status?
So, technology affects my social emotional status, with technology I am very happy when I play video games with my friends, or talk/text them because it just brings me joy and it's something to do. Moreover, learning by using technology gives me a little bit of an annoying feeling because it's annoying to always have to stare at a screen just to learn.
Do you think technology makes you more happy or more sad/nervous and if it makes you more agitated or nervous how can you solve the problem?
Technologies depending on what I'm doing or how I'm feeling because, if I'm playing with my friends and just enjoying the time or watching a movie I'll be happy, I'll be normal it won't be too sad or anything. However, if I'm doing like a bunch of school work, then I get a bunch of headaches from technology, I'm just going to feel a little annoyed and stressed which is not a very good feeling.
How many minutes do you think it's enough or like normal for you to use technology in a day?
So including school and entertainment and everything in order to have a healthy life 6 hours is maximum.
How do you see yourself in the future in connection with the knowledge and how you access information?
Well, for the future I expect to see a lot of good things because I have all these resources from doctors
and everyone teachers all online, I can research things that I didn't know, I can get information from all
different people that do not surround me in everyday life and I could get different perspectives so,
I am expecting to have a lot of knowledge and success in the future.
What do you expect from the technology, how do you think the future of technology will be like?
Technology will probably evolve to be very useful, a lot more than it already is. I believe it is going to be
amazing because they're already inventing cars that don't need gas which is very revolutionary because
it helps the earth and also they're making holograms; holograms are 3D looking things using technology
to make it look real which I think is a good idea because especially when you're not near someone
talking to, them looking like a real human is a lot better than just looking at a screen
What do you think about technology and social skills in the future? Do you think you're going
to get used to this reflecting not having people around just talking to the computer and
technology?
I know that for me I think social skills are very important and having people to talk to you in person
are very important but, in the future since technology is evolving so much it's most likely not going to
help social skills but some it might change and maybe a improve social skills or it might make it worse.
What if it makes it worse, what is your solution?
If it makes it worse maybe there should just be like a certain amount of time where you just don't use
technology or if you have to use technology use it as less as you can just so you can improve on your
social skills
As you can see, I made sure not to change the language used for this interview, just to be as realistic
as possible. From this interview I understood that even teenagers know that technology helps but distracts them as well. I was shocked to know that he would call normal spending 6 hours in front of a computer and especially when the main reason of how he uses technology is not for school.
As for if they learn something or no, I would say I was thrilled to know that he understands and knows even terms that I do not have a name for.

Hi Jasmina! Your interview highlighted the ways in which I forget how deeply embedded technology is in my life. I am the worst when it comes to navigation and before GPS I was constantly getting lost or missing a turn! Back in the day I had to print out the directions and then print out pictures of landmarks that I could recognize along the way. Nowadays, I just have to type in the address or the name of the place and my phone will take me there through Bluetooth navigation, which my apple watch gives me a gentle buzzing reminder that my turn is coming up! I forget to think of an activity like this as “using technology”. Very interesting interview - thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI continue to be so amazed about how today's adolescents view technology and how much of their time is spent on online platforms or using tech. Im curious about how they come up with an answer when we ask them how much time is appropriate to devote to technology use per day. I was intrigued by that answer of " six hours" because I too asked this question to one of my classes and got almost a similar response. As an adult I look at six hours as my entire day at work, and many young adults look at it as the amount they should spend using technology per day. I think these interviews allow us to better understand how young adults view and use technology.
